Making Sense of Our Empire

Making Sense of Our Empire

Listening to the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire and witnessing the barrage of events, commentary on events, commentary on the commentary on events and general nonsense that takes place on the media, it’s hard to not draw a parallel. My efforts at making sense of it so far have only brought me frustration.

The Roman Empire

Conquering. Jealousy. War. Nepotism. Narcissism (Constantine, Constantius, Constantina…). Ownership. Anger. Revolt. Murder, torture, murder. So far, that seems to sum it up. I can’t help but think about this being the basis of our society and democracy (almost (more…)

Art Week of Solitude

Art Week of Solitude

It has literally been years since I’ve been able to spend an art week to concentrate, relax and focus on nothing else but working on some artwork. Seems crazy since some artists have weeks, months, maybe even a year to devote to creating their work. I have no excuses. It is what it is. I just did whatever was possible to take time off work, toddler, relationship, people, freelance–everything. It has been exquisite. (more…)

New Downtown Phoenix map for Found:Re Hotel

New Downtown Phoenix map for Found:Re Hotel

It’s been a busy month! I also started a new hand-drawn map of Downtown Phoenix for the new Found:Re hotel on Portland and Central. I’m super excited about this one since I think I’ll be able to add a lot more detail than in the previous maps I’ve done. I’m also hoping to point some of my favorite, smaller nuanced interests of the area that I know so well. I try to just put my mind in the actual area and remember or imagine what it is that attracts me to certain spots, where I walk, where I bike, what are easy things to do together. I’m looking forward to where this project will go!

I’m excited to be sharing my new series of horizon drawings at The McKinley Club in downtown Phoenix. This is a co-working and small offices space that was beautifully renovated. Thursday, they have their weekly Happy Hour from 5pm-7pm. Then, this Friday, they’re hosting a Community Yard Sale from 7-10pm where anyone can bring things they’re trying to get rid of and have a beer. (more…)

Lola Coffee Horizon drawing, 9″ x 12″, ink and pen on paper

Looking through a window, the horizon line is framed instead of being open. The breath or air leaks out over the top as it tries to push through the constraints. The breath also grows larger as it reaches the top of the boundary. I sat at the coffeeshop, waiting for a friend to meet me. She couldn’t arrive because of family trouble. It seemed useful to mark the moment because, why not mark any moment?

Filling the horizon with air

Filling the horizon with air

Beginning by filling the horizon with air. The space that is the cloud horizon is a thin line that’s always shifting. Try to draw a cloud and the edge will never be static enough. Every mark is correct because there’s nothing to reference when you look back at it. Scritch-a-scratch a blind gesture and move on to the next. Try to capture a moment and while always being wrong.

Embark-a-draw-o: embarking on new drawings

Embark-a-draw-o: embarking on new drawings

Perhaps driven by yet another rejection letter to cap off 2015 (but more likely not), I’m embarking on a series of new drawings. As much as I love them, there are too many old ones on this site. After spending several months developing thoughts on edges, occupied space, allowable space and breathing plus arrangements with daycare, my job, writing and freelance projects, I’m ready to go.
